Another Sucessful Weekend for Stable 10 May 2009
Another excellent weekend for the Rogerson stables, both in
New Zealand and
Australia, with wins in both codes and some very positive runs from a number of place getters.
On a very wet Friday evening at Alexander Park in
Auckland the non tote event featured our promising 2YO trotting filly
Topnotch Dream (Dream Vacation-Blue Jean Lady). She finished second and gives every indication that a win is close at hand for owners G A Rogerson, G B Rogerson, F Scali, and the Discombe Partnership Syndicate
Race 2 saw a very nice win by our 3YO filly
Electrifying Cullen (Christian Cullen-Electrofying Franco) who is owned by G A Rogerson, R C Christey and Mrs L A Christey. Her driver and co-trainer Steven Reid was most impressed by how easily she went to the front in the straight and commented that he was very confident of her going through the grades.
Napoleon Dynamite
, raced by Sydney based Max Whitby and Graeme Rogerson, was an unlucky second in Race 5 after stable Junior Driver Simon Lawson was caught wide for the final lap, but the horse fought on courageously and only went down by a neck. Another win is close.
In the sixth event our two representatives
Ultimo and
Carlos both ran very good races to finish second and third respectively behind a smart pacer from the Brent Mangos stable. Both horses continue to race well and more wins can be expected from them.
In Race 9 the cream of the
North Island's Junior Drivers lined up and once again Simon Lawson was to the fore. He drove a perfect race on our 3YO filly
Winsome Courage (Courage Under Fire-Winsome Rock) for owners G A Rogerson, R Upadhyaya, B W Honeybone, D J Martin and D H Ha. She is an exciting filly who had pleased Graeme and Steven in her work at home and were expecting a big run.
On Saturday the
New Zealand stable was spread far and wide with runners at the Tauranga and New Plymouth gallops and also at the premier trotting meeting at Addington.
Unfortunately the highly promising but erratic 2YO trotter
Chocolate Brownie once again broke in the run up behind the mobile gate in the lucrative stakes race and ruined his chances by losing 300 metres before the gate was released. There is no questioning this young trotter's ability (he won two non tote events in the North before venturing South) but Graeme and Steven have some issues to address with his racing manners. No doubt these will be sorted in due course and his true ability will be shown on the racetrack. He certainly has a cult following in the stable. This is lead by young part owner, Bailey Rogerson who has emptied her father Gary's vegetable garden of carrots in recent weeks.
In one of the feature races for the 2YO pacers, the Sires Stakes final, we were represented by
Cloncullen and
Freestyler. Cloncullen ran a very good 4th and Freestyler had no luck at all. Freestyle may run in an upcoming event at Oamaru in a bid to make the Jewels field. David Butcher was very pleased with the feel he got from the horse. Steven and Graeme will look at options for Cloncullen, as he also heads to the Jewels at the end of May.
The continuing excellent results being shown by the harness stable are a credit to the staff and reflect the hard work being invested in the team. Graeme and Steven and the staff have put a huge amount of time and effort into the daily routines and the results being achieved are indicative of this. The exciting thing is that there are still many promising young horses yet to race which augers well for coming seasons.
On a fine but cool New Plymouth day, co-trainer Scott Lucock, Racing Manager Murray Gregory and a number of our northern owners ventured south to watch our team of four gallopers race.
First up was the 3YO unraced filly
She's Refined (by Encosta De Largo). Owned by Oaks Stud proprietor, Dick Karreman, she settled at the rear of the field in the 1400 metre event, she ran on resolutely in the straight to finish a handy 5th. Rider Lisa Allpress was happy with the run and suggested to Scott that one she gets to a longer distance she was more than capable of being competitive.
In the Rating 90 1200 metre race we had 4YO mare
Caladesi (St. Petersburg- Ballykiss) who was second up after an encouraging fresh up run at Tauranga two weeks earlier. With 4kg claiming apprentice Rosie Myers riding, the filly ran a very nice race when finishing second to the hot favourite and gives every indication that a win is close at hand.
In the following event, the Rating 70 1200, our representative
Pocket Diary (3YO colt Jungle Pocket-Dear Diary) with Masa Tanaka went round. A number of his part owners, the well named Great Expectations Syndicate were at the track to watch their horse compete. The other two part owners Raj Upadhyaya in the
Hunter
Valley in
Australia and Graeme in
Christchurch, were closely watching on television and expectation were high.
Pocket Diary
jumped well ad was traveling sweetly on the turn where Masa kicked him 3 lengths clear. He fought like a caged tiger and managed to keep out the fast closing local favourite trained by Alan Sharock to win by a nose. There was a very happy group waiting for the horse and jockey to return to scale who were rewarded with champagne in the Rough Habit Winner's lounge shortly afterwards. It was a very gutsy performance from the colt who gives every indication that more wins will come.
At Tauranga,
Cullcha,
6yo b m Cullen – Muchacha ran her usual honest race fresh up and will improve considerably with the run. She appreciates winter footing as her record shows of 3 wins 4 seconds and 8 thirds on soft and heavy tracks.
In Sydney Graeme had another successful day when he lined up the 4Y0 gelding
Wildwind Spirit (Naturalism-Pusan) in a Rating 83 2250 metre event. Ridden by Chris Munce, the horse traveled beautifully all the way and won narrowly but convincingly at the juicy odds of $8.00.
This is a family that Graeme has had many wins from and this horse looks set to carry on his winning way.
Graeme also lined up
Arlington in the $100,000 Rowley Mile, one of the day's feature races in
Australia. Settling up on the pace
Arlington went a very good race for third.
“He went ok. Riding him outside the leader probably didn’t suit as he’s a better chaser,”
said Peter Wells, his rider.
Overall it was a very satisfying weekend and the stable can be confident that more positive results will flow in coming weeks.
