Rogerson Lands Third Provincial Stayers Ch'ship Final
By Mark Brassel Sydney
Trainer Graeme Rogerson has made the Mitavite Provincial Stayers Championship something of his own.
Rogerson won Saturday's $60,000 Richmond Club-Mitavite Provincial Stayers Championship (2250m) final at Hawkesbury with Wildwind Spirit - the third time he has taken out the final in the past four years.
Rogerson won the '07 final with Thunder and Rain and the '06 final with Liquidity.
In fact Rogerson was close to winning four straight (in only five runnings of the Championship) when Monty's Boy was beaten 0.6 lengths by Deltona and Superract in the 2008 edition.
There was a 'dead-heat' in the $10,000 top point scorer of the Mitavite Provincial Stayers Championship - with Douraya and Emperor's Reign finishing with 11 points each. Connections of both horses split the $10,000 cheque.
"The Provincial Stayer's Championship has now been run and won five times and has continually progressed to provide increased opportunities for horses that are competitive below the top Autumn Carnival level," Racing NSW General Manager-Racing and Commercial, Greg Rudolph said.
"The final was a great race and is testimony to the success of the series in providing those opportunities, whilst endeavouring to foster the development of quality stayers."
Mitavite, the major sponsor of the series, has been pleased to support the stayers' concept: "The Mitavite Provincial Stayers Championship is a tremendous initiative of Racing NSW and the provincial clubs," said Mitavite's Kyle Robertson. "Mitavite is glad to have played a part in bolstering the staying ranks in New South Wales," he added.
The Mitavite Provincial Stayers Championship was created by Racing NSW with the support of the Provincial Association of NSW and is designed to provide higher prizemoney opportunities and increased exposure for owners and trainers of up-and-coming stayers, with Championship heats run entirely on Provincial tracks in NSW.
