Zagata Wins Great Southern at Mornington 24 May 2009
Zagata showed his real worth with a brilliant win in the Great Southern Stepplechase over 3300 metres at Mornington this afternoon. Perfectly ridden by Brent Scott, Zagata sat outside the leader for the majority of the event before challenging at the 600 metre mark and moving away for a five length victory. The win added another $47,000 to his already impressive racing career and more is in store over the coming months. The
7yo bay gelding is by Zabeel from M'lady's Garter.
Zagata, owned by Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan along a syndicate managed by Graeme Rogerson, had been freshened up since leading and running fourth to Pentacolo in the Great Eastern Steeple (4950m) at Oakbank on April 13.
"I trialled him at Moe and he pulled up a bit big and I said to Graeme (Rogerson) he should be right for the Australian (Steeple), but I was wrong," Scott said after Zagata defeated Tainui Teina and Wheel The Lead.
"He's not the easiest of rides but he gave me a lovely ride today.
"Kylie (Scott's wife) does all the work with him. He's a bit of a handful
It was a great result for Team Rogerson who had the horse rock hard fit before he joined John Wheeler's team in Victoria. Michelle Northcott had spent many hours transporting him to the beach at Raglan and he surprised many with a first up win at New Plymouth in March.
Graeme Rogerson was quoted as saying the following earlier this week in a newspaper interview:
Trans-Tasman trainer Graeme Rogerson is among those to welcome the resumption of jumps racing in Victoria.
Although he now only trains a handful of jumpers himself in New Zealand, Rogerson is a part-owner with Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan of Zagata who is set to run in Sunday's Great Southern steeplechase (3300m) at Mornington.
Trained by John Wheeler, Zagata has won two races over jumps in New Zealand and ran fourth in the Great Eastern Steeple at Oakbank's Easter carnival at his second Australian start.
"I think it's a very small minority who don't want jumps racing," Rogerson said.
"It's part of racing folklore and should be retained.
"I think they go too fast in the hurdles these days.
"Horses need to be made to line them (obstacles) up and jump them properly.
"Zagata is a very promising jumper and went well at Oakbank."
Among the jumpers to be trained by Rogerson was Tennessee Oak, winner of the 1997 Cup Day Hurdle.
The traditional opener to Melbourne Cup day at Flemington, the race has since been abandoned with no jumps conducted at Melbourne's premier course.
Rogerson trains promising jumper Cape Kinaveral in New Zealand where the six-year-old has two wins over obstacles and finished a close fourth in an open hurdle at Te Rapa on Saturday.
